FAQs

What if racing is cancelled because of bad weather?

Unfortunately, this may occasionally happen, especially in the winter months. However, the visit can still go ahead as the Racing to School team will adapt the programme and include extra activities to replace watching the races.

What arrangements are made for lunch and refreshments?

Lunch is not provided for staff or pupils/student so packed lunches should be brought. Some racecourses provide drinks during the morning break. The Racing to School education officer will let you know if this is the case.

What should pupils/students wear and bring on the day?

Many of the activities will take place outside, so be prepared for all weathers. Warm, waterproof shoes and clothes should be worn if there’s any likelihood of wet, cold weather. We’ll provide workbooks, but pupils/students should bring pens and pencils.

What if the weather is particularly bad on the day?

We’ll try to go ahead with as many outdoor activities as possible, but in extreme weather conditions the education officer will adapt the itinerary to include more indoor activities.

What if some of our pupils/students have particular needs?

We’re keen to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to participate in our programme and will endeavour to cater for those with Special Needs. Please speak to the education officer in advance to discuss the details.

How much does the day cost?

There’s no charge made to schools or colleges by Racing to School. However, you must pay for your own travel and ensure that pupils/students bring packed lunches.

What happens if the day has to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances?

This rarely happens, but, just in case, we have your contact details and you have ours so that each party can be informed as soon as possible. We’ll endeavour to rearrange the visit for a later date if at all possible.

What if we’re delayed on the way?

Please call the education officer at the earliest opportunity so we can adapt the day’s itinerary accordingly.

How many members of staff do we need to bring with us?

Please follow standard guidelines to make sure that your group is accompanied by the legally required number of members of staff/adults.

Do we need to stay with our pupils/student all day?

Yes, it’s your responsibility to supervise your group at all times.

Do you cover the subject of gambling?

No, we use racing as the backdrop to support the curriculum and allow young people to see the application of subjects in a different and practical setting. It’s not a Racing to School policy to include, involve or encourage any aspect of gambling during the delivery of educational events.

Where a school or teacher asks a specific question about betting and gambling within the context of racing, particularly in relation to Citizenship Studies or Maths, we’ll endeavour to provide balanced information with an emphasis on highlighting the risks involved.
