TRICK OR TWEET?

1st November, 2011

BHEST’s education programme, Racing to School, got a Halloween weekend treat after receiving £400 of Tweet Lady’s prize money.

The aptly named Tweet Lady, who landed a double during the Flat racing season at Kempton Park Racecourse, has been the star of an initiative to involve huge numbers in racehorse ownership for the first time. Through Twitter, she has provided regular bulletins about her stable life, her training regime and her hopes before her races - all in less than 140 characters.

BHEST was one of three racing charities to receive a percentage of Tweet Lady’s prize money as voted for by The People’s Horse Club Members.  HEROS and Racing Welfare also benefitted.

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Racing for Change, an initiative created to broaden the appeal of the sport, said, “We’re delighted to have been able to promote horseracing through the freshest of mediums. Tweet Lady has really captured the wider public’s imagination and the interaction she generates on Twitter through simple daily tweets has been astonishing.

“Tweet Lady has given a considerable number of people the joy of being part of winning Racing Club. We are also pleased to have raised some valuable funds for three well deserving charities.”

Judith Allen BHEST Executive Director said, “I am delighted that Tweet Lady’s followers voted to give a proportion of her prize money to the Racing to School programme.  The funds will be used to support children from deprived areas who rarely experience days out to access a unique educational experience behind the scenes at a local stud or trainer’s yard.

“Racing to School uses the context of racing to support children to learn in a new fun way and, like the Tweet Lady and Racing for Change initiatives, Racing to School aims to bring new people into the sport.  For 85% of the children who attend a Racing to School day it is their very first racecourse experience; the programme invests in the future of racing and sparks interest in the sport.”
