RACING TO SCHOOL STARS AT SANDOWN
26th July, 2011
Pupils from Stanley High School, Carshalton became the stars of the show when they attended a Racing to School Day at Sandown Park last Thursday (21 July).
Premier dedicated horseracing satellite broadcaster, Racing UK, tracked the students as BHEST Education Officers Ollie McPhail and Carrie Ford introduced them to practical maths in the racecourse environment as part of racing’s education programme.
Racing UK presenter and three-times Broadcaster of the Year, Nick Luck, interviewed some of the pupils who were also given the opportunity to quiz on camera former Champion Apprentice jockey, William Buick, whose big race wins have included Group 1 successes in Great Britain, France, Dubai and the USA.
Footage from the day will be edited down to a ten minute package to be shown on Racing UK at a later date and will feature on the BHEST website with the aim of promoting awareness of racing’s education programme, Racing to School, which is managed by the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST), a registered charity.
BHEST Executive Director, Judith Allen said, ‘We are delighted that Racing UK has taken such a keen interest in Racing to School and are very grateful to them for helping promote racing’s education programme.
‘Each year over 10,000 young people take part in educational activities managed by BHEST and for the vast majority it is their first experience of horseracing and one that stays with them for many years to come. Hopefully today’s pupils will become great ambassadors for racing and its education programme.’
Racing UK PR and Press Manager Seb Vance said: “To see the programme first-hand was very eye-opening and is an initiative which appears to be working very well.
“The pupils were 100% engaged from start to finish and took a keen interest in all that was going on. I think only one had been to a racecourse before, but by the end of the day, all of them said they would definitely return, which is a great indicator as to its success.
“The feature, which will be aired on Racing UK next month, will certainly be well worth watching and hopefully raise further awareness of BHEST.”
Young people from Stanley High School celebrate their moment in the limelight.
